Professional Certification Programs in Grief and Bereavement

[Reviewed and updated June 1, 2025]

A license authorizes a person to practice in a particular specialty in healthcare. Certification through a national board affirms advanced knowledge, skill, and practice to meet the challenges of that specialty, and it contributes to better patient outcomes. Certification is a voluntary process, and is sought by those who care enough to earn and maintain the highest credentials in their specialty, thereby demonstrating a commitment to excellence in practice. Certification requires coursework, experience in the field, successful completion of a standardized exam, and ongoing continuing education and professional development. (Note that certification differs from programs offering only a certificate upon completion of course work, in that certificate programs do not offer standardized testing of knowledge and do not require ongoing continuing education.) ~ Marty Tousley

HFA Launches New Hospice Information Center

In its ongoing effort to inform and assist the public, Hospice Foundation of America (HFA) now offers a wide range of online resources for families, friends and professionals at its newly launched Hospice Information Center. Part of HFA CARES: Hospice Foundation of America's Conversations, Advice, Resources and Education Series, the project is funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The online Hospice Information Center provides information about hospice care and other aspects of end of life, such as caregiving, grief, and palliative care. Visitors to the site are invited to:
  • Listen to the Voices of people who have experienced hospice, who work in hospice, and other experts who work in the area of grief and bereavement.
  • Educate Yourself and Others about the basics of hospice care, grief, and caregiving. Online presentations are available to access information in a convenient, user-friendly format; free continuing education credits are available for some programs.
  • Read and Share Resources on end-of-life care, hospice, and grief and bereavement. HFA has developed one-page Fact Sheets on many topics. Print resources are also available in Spanish, and materials in Chinese and Vietnamese will be available soon.
  • Ask HFA questions about hospice care, caregiving, and grief.
The resources in the Hospice Information Center make it easier for family and friends to learn about hospice and how it can help people cope with some of life's most challenging situations, in a format that is accessible and understandable. The programming also provides hospices and other community organizations the opportunity to educate staff and volunteers about the basics of hospice care, caregiving, and grief. Brochures are available to download and share, and links are provided to guide viewers to more information on a variety of subjects.

Grieving Children and Adolescents: The Role of Internet Support

As part of its effort to explore how children and adolescents can use the Internet as an additional source of information and support for grief, Hospice Foundation of America will offer an online Webinar, Grieving Children and Adolescents: The Role of Internet Support on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM Eastern Time.  Panelists Pamela Gabbay and Cendra Lynn will discuss advantages and disadvantages of utilizing the Internet for bereavement support, as well as innovative strategies for using this technology for education, ritual and support in a monitored, safe way.
